Paint
01/25/08 at 8:04am

I am a owner of a 93 Allante and during late summer of 07 noticed some spots beginning to form underneath the paint on the deck lid.  I have tried to remove them with everything known to man with little or no results.  I am beginning to wonder of some cheminal reaction is starting to take place with the Aluminum?  Does anyone have any suggestions? and in order to have the deck lid re-painted does it require some special prep prior to painting? or would the person painting/prep the lid know what needs to be done?

Jimbo,

This post should really be in problems/solutions.

However, it sounds like the aluminum lid has started to oxidize.  It's under the paint, so your body should would have to repair it for you.  Be sure they know it's aluminum ahead of time.  Only the hood, the trunk lid and the hardtops are aluminum.  The rest of the body is steel.

Good luck,
Steve

Steve,
Thanks for the quick response.  Do you think the deck lid will need to be sanded and re-painted?

The prep is the most important part of any paint job. If you can see it before it is painted and it is not bock sanded out properly. You will still see it under certain light condition. If I was to do my hood again I would have if striped, primed, blocked sanded and repainted. But on the other hand it could cost more than you are willing to pay.
Good luck

Here's a tip.  Make sure you have it stripped and primed with Epoxy Primer.  This primer has the best adhesion to aluminum and the best barrier against moisture.

On similar topic I have noticed that the fasteners holding the deck lid to the hinges are showing signs of corrosion.  Has anyone tried to remove these fasterners without stripping them? and would stainless fasterners be something to use?

Thanks and much appreciated

This is a common issue with Allantes and it occurs because the trunk lids are made of aluminum, so there is couple between the dissimilar metals that causes corrosion of the bolts. Usually at the hinge on the driver side of the car.

The issue has been discussed ad nauseum, but not for a long time.

Stainless bolts have been proposed, but I don'y know whether anybody has actually tried them or, if they have, what the outcome was.

I doubt that removing the bolts would strip them, but of course I cannot guarantee that.

You might carefully clean away the corrosion carefully with everything as-is and repaint the ugly parts with touch-up paint and a small brush to take care of the appearance issue, but you'll have to keep doing that.

If you can do a search on this topic, you will find additional information, or Wally might steer you to info.
Don't ask me who Wally is, but he will probably find you!

Good luck with this.

If it makes you feel better, yours is far from being the only Allante suffering this malady.

Jimbo,
For what it's worth......
My '91, red has the same issues. I believe they are caused by the galvatic reaction between the different metals. I know of at least a couple of more cars in the Chicago area that suffer the same.

The corrosion on the bolts, probably those on the driver's side, are also common. I replaced mine with stainless steel bolts.

While I have not had the problem with the paint since both the 92 red and 93 montana blue have have their paint redone I have replaced the driver side bolts with stainless steel on the 92 due to corrosion. On the other hand the 93 has the original bolts and look as good as the day they left the factory
